The image of a seasoned cowboy in a plaid shirt, driving down the dusty road in his big black truck and smilingly inviting his long-haired cowgirl in hot pants and leather hat, is perhaps the first thing we have in mind. With a song by Zach Bryan playing in the background. As beautiful as this picture is, it is not the only picture frame for cowboy boots. They have long since crawled out of the corner and conquered the fashion world. Every now and then.

But now we can say with certainty that they will be the it-piece of 2023 par excellence

While we have seen them hesitantly here and there on the catwalk and on fashionistas in recent years, this year we can clearly say that they are on the verge of conquering the fashion world at high speed. And they are doing so classically and elegantly, intelligently and skillfully. Just the way they are.

So why are they more trendy than ever right now?

If we take a look at what has been going on socially, politically, socially (and anti-socially) over the last few years, it is anything but surprising that something that radiates consistency and confidence, but is highly individual, has captured our hearts. Fashion is always a mirror of society, its trends a sign of what humanity desires. Even if one might think that fashion is completely detached from political and social issues, it is the forward-thinking answer to the questions of our time in art form. This is also what makes well-known designers so successful. Many are good, but only those who feel the pulse of the times are really good.

To understand why fashion is going in two diametrically different directions, let's take a closer look:

As different as our lives are, socially, geographically and politically, no one has been left out of the churning times. After what we thought was total security, a flight of inovatoin, we realized that nothing is set in stone and, perhaps like the flap of a butterfly's wings, many things can suddenly change. Many realized what Paolo Coehlo had been saying for a long time: "One day you will wake up and no longer have time for the things you always wanted. Do them now." Locked up in lockdown, we longed for the lightness of being out, for shopping trips, for bathing with friends, for freedom to choose where to go, and even to return to our office.

After everything calmed down a bit and we were able to go about our usual business again, we could have said that everything was back to normal. But it wasn't. Our thinking has been shaken up more than we thought, friendships have disappeared, new friendships have been forged elsewhere. New international conflicts emerged, the desired calm and "back to the old" did not come. After a long period of abstinence, the need for consumption increased again, finally catching up on what was missed.
This was inevitably reflected in fashion. While panic and an apocalyptic mood were still being spread in 2021, last year the trend was clearly steered back towards intimacy and hope for the future. It was once again about pleasure and consumption, indulgence. Lots of lace, skimpy tops, bright colors, exuberant tenues, exaggerated shapes. Joie de vivre wanted to be sold.
The resolutions made in silence about sustainability and doing without were simply designed away. Fast fashion boomed like never before, culminating in ultra-fast fashion. Disposable goods made from resources that we can no longer recover. Not one eye, no, both eyes were turned with regard to sustainability and working conditions.
The loud voices calling for a rethink in the fashion industry were pushed back into the eco-corner.

Even if many wanted to make us believe that the trend towards back to nature, the circular economy, health and CO2 responsibility was unbelievable, unfortunately it is actually the case:
Never before has so much been produced and consumed as last year.

This year we will be able to observe a phenomenon: the fashion world will steer itself in two completely different directions: one in which consumption without consideration takes center stage, and one that reflects back on what we really want. What we need to pay attention to if we want to preserve this world. True and honest responsibility towards the whole and therefore towards ourselves.

Let's close the arc here and come back to it: the boots.

The fact that cowboy boots will be the it piece of the year is firstly demonstrated by their function as a link between the two trends. They will be seen across the board, but in two completely different directions. On the one hand, we will unfortunately see fast-moving, poorly produced, uncomfortable and short-lasting boots made in low-wage countries that don't even give the impression of being real boots. But they are produced quickly, sold quickly and therefore thrown away quickly.

But on the other hand, we will see what real cowboy boots and their philosophy stand for: A return to true values. Authenticity is once again written in capital letters and lived. After the turbulent times, we are now ready to recognize what we really want and need. We stand up for ourselves. For our values and our desires. We have learned that we can't please everyone and that opinions can sometimes be different, but that we should remain true to ourselves. And western boots are a fashionable expression of being true to yourself. Handmade production from high-quality natural materials, slow-grown leather, designed with care. They are not bought today for tomorrow evening and stowed away in the wardrobe the day after tomorrow, but are selected and compared. They are registered, cherished, cared for, repaired and, what you will never have with fast fashion: they only become truly perfect with time.
